Elevating Interiors: A Few of My Top Design Insights at Nikki Levy Interiors

Here at Nikki Levy Interiors, one of the most influential interior design firms in South Florida, we’re more than just designers; we’re innovators and educators in style and functionality. I’m Nikki Levy, and my Boca Raton-based firm serves as a crucible of creativity in the vibrant locales of West Palm Beach and Miami. Let me share with you some key tips and insights that reflect our ethos and guide our designs.

Embrace Local Flavors with Global Appeal
South Florida is a rich tapestry of cultures and styles. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we expertly weave these diverse influences into our designs, creating spaces that are cosmopolitan yet distinctly local. Whether it’s incorporating Miami’s Art Deco pastels or Boca Raton’s tropical verdure, I ensure that every design reflects a unique character.

2. Opt for Multifunctional Design
The demand for versatile living spaces has never been higher. Specializing in creating multifunctional rooms, we ensure that your home meets various needs without sacrificing elegance. Imagine convertible offices that double as guest rooms, or dining areas that easily transition from cozy family meals to upscale gatherings—our designs ensure you make the most of every square inch.

3. Let Natural Light Lead the Way

Here in sunny South Florida, natural light is abundant and invaluable. I recommend using light to create warm, inviting spaces. Strategic placement of mirrors, translucent window treatments, and thoughtful layout planning can enhance the natural brightness of your home, making spaces feel larger and more welcoming.

4. Invest in Quality Over Quantity
I always advise investing in high-quality pieces. Whether it’s a standout piece of furniture or bespoke lighting fixtures, choosing quality over quantity ensures your space not only looks spectacular but also withstands the test of time.

5. Art Matters
Art personalizes and elevates any space, and at Nikki Levy Interiors, we believe it’s essential. I often incorporate stunning artworks from local artists to create focal points in a room, adding depth and emotion that truly reflects the homeowner’s personality.

Through these insights, we at Nikki Levy Interiors not only aim to beautify spaces but also to educate and inspire our clients across West Palm Beach, Miami, and beyond. Each project we undertake is a testament to our dedication to excellence, creativity, and client satisfaction. Discover the possibilities with South Florida’s top interior design expert—me, Nikki Levy—and transform your space into a personalized masterpiece of form and function.

Nikki Levy’s Tips for a Quick Design Refresh

Dive into the world of Nikki Levy Interiors with these snappy, fun-filled tips, each distilled from our real projects and Instagram gems. Here’s how we keep interiors fabulous and functional without missing a beat (or a joke):

Tip 1: Mix, Don’t Match Who says your chairs need to be twins? Mixing styles can bring personality and surprise to any room. It’s like a good party mix—something for everyone!

Tip 2: Pillows: The More, the Merrier Pillows are the shoes of your sofa. Can you ever have too many? We think not. Swap them out seasonally, or whenever you need a splash of new color.

Tip 3: Go Bold with Ceilings Don’t forget the fifth wall! A bold ceiling color or wallpaper can transform a room from the top down. It’s the upper crust of interior design. To totally change up your space with only 1 element – the ceiling is the winner.

Tip 4: Light It Up Good lighting is everything. It’s like Photoshop for your home. Layer different sources to give your space the best glow-up. Get floor lamps, plug in sconces or even mini-LED spot lights to hide in planters to make the vibe….well…vibe.

Tip 5: Rugs: Bigger Is Better A small rug can make a room feel smaller, but a big rug? Now you’re in the major leagues. Ensure it’s big enough to tuck under furniture pieces to tie the room together. Toss that old rug snd pop in a new one and your room immediately feels fresher.

Tip 6: Embrace the Eclectic Your home should be a collection of what you love. An eclectic style tells your story—each piece a chapter.  Look in your closet, have a purse, scarf or even necklace that you love, throw it into a frame, and you got art that means something to you!

Tip 7: Wall Art at Eye Level Hang art at eye level for maximum impact. Yes, even if you’re tall. It’s the gallery approach to personal spaces. Consider moving your art around, reframing or reposition it.  It will make a BIG difference!

Tip 8: Reflect with Mirrors Mirrors aren’t just for checking your outfit—they make spaces feel larger and lighter. Place them opposite windows to double down on natural light.  A mirror well positioned is like a window! Don’t forget to layer it with a stool in front, table, or even a coat rack, it will be a fantastic story!

Tip 9: Storage Can Be Stylish Functional can be fun! Think ottomans with storage, chic shelving units, and baskets that add style while hiding clutter.  Put that clutter away.  That will make the process 80% easier!

Tip 10: Keep It Cozy Comfort is king. Layer soft throws, use plush textures, and create nooks that invite people to relax and stay awhile. You want to feel comfortable and content in your home.  Cold and lack of charm is great for a museum, but not for you!

Tip 11: Don’t Rush The best spaces evolve. Give yourself permission to take time finding the perfect piece. It’s like dating—you’ll know when it’s the right one.  Don’t be afraid to bring things home and “try them on”, sometimes that’s all you need to make a decision!

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we believe that your home should be as unique as you are—filled with fun, function, and a little bit of flair. Follow us for more tips and tricks that make design a delightful part of everyday life!

Why Interior Design is the “Necessary Luxury” Your Home Needs

Interior design often gets tagged as a luxury—something for those with sprawling estates or beachfront properties . But if you own a home, you want it to feel right, work for your lifestyle, and be an asset that grows in value. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we believe interior design is not just a splurge; it’s a necessity that makes your home function better, feel amazing, and truly shine.

1. Your Home is an Investment—Treat it Like One!

For most people, a home is one of the biggest investments they’ll ever make. Whether you’re in Delray Beach, Ft. Lauderdale, or West Palm Beach, enhancing your property’s value should be high on the list. Professional design does just that by elevating your home’s look and making it worth every penny. Our clients know that a home that looks cohesive, polished, and well-thought-out not only stands out to buyers but also holds its value.

2. A Boost to Everyday Living

Good design isn’t just about visual appeal; it’s about upgrading the way you live. Think about spaces that flow perfectly, support routines effortlessly, and make you feel great just walking in. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we create homes that are not only beautiful but also make daily life smoother, cozier, and simply better.

3. Avoiding Costly Design Blunders

A professional designer helps you avoid expensive mistakes—like buying a stunning sofa that won’t fit through the door or choosing flooring that doesn’t stand up to the Florida sun. Nikki Levy Interiors has the experience and eye for detail to steer you clear of these pitfalls so you don’t have to learn the hard (and pricey) way. We work in homes in West Palm, Delray Beach, Highland Beach,  Boca Raton, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami, helping clients avoid the “what was I thinking?” moments that lead to costly do-overs.

4. Access to Exclusive Options and Fresh Ideas

Working with a designer gives you access to a world of possibilities beyond the ordinary. From unique materials to bespoke furnishings, Nikki Levy Interiors curates ideas that transform spaces and bring personality to every corner. We bring a designer’s eye and years of experience to the table, helping you go beyond the predictable and find the extraordinary so your home stands out in all the best ways.

5. Space Planning: More than Just Furniture Placement

Professional space planning is all about making your home work seamlessly for your lifestyle. We’re experts at maximizing every square inch, arranging furniture to create flow, and making rooms functional and beautiful. From arranging cozy family rooms to multifunctional home offices, we help homes in Delray Beach, West Palm, and beyond balance style and livability.

6. 3D Renders Make Your Vision Crystal Clear

Visualizing a completed design can be challenging, which is why 3D renders are so powerful. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we use 3D models to show you exactly how the textures, layout, and lighting will come together. These renders give clarity and confidence, helping you understand how every piece fits to bring your vision to life.

7. Budgeting & Cost Management: Designer Edition

Budgeting for a home design project can feel like an overwhelming task. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we manage costs, prioritize what matters most, and work within your budget to make sure every dollar counts. Whether you’re in Fort Lauderdale or Palm Beach, our goal is to keep the project on track and maximize the value of every investment.

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we’re all about creating stunning, functional spaces for Florida homes and beyond that reflect the people who live in them. Interior design may be a luxury, but it’s also a necessity for those who want a home that feels exquisitely livable, works well, and supports their lifestyle. So, if you’re in Boca Raton, Delray Beach, Fort Lauderdale, or nearby, let’s talk about making your home the best it can be.

Why Interior Designers Don’t Accept Returns (And Why Communication is Key)

Designing your dream home is like crafting a perfectly tailored outfit—every piece, fabric, and accessory is handpicked to suit your style. But here’s a little secret: unlike your favorite online clothing store, interior designers don’t accept returns. Why, you ask? Well, it’s not because we’re difficult! It’s because every choice we make together is highly customized, just for you.

Let’s break it down (with a fun analogy, of course).

Custom Design is Like Ordering a Custom Pizza—No Returns on Anchovies!

Imagine you’re at a pizza joint and you order a pie with truffle oil, arugula, and anchovies (hey, no judgment!). The pizza arrives, and it’s exactly what you asked for. But suddenly you realize… maybe anchovies aren’t your thing. Can you send it back? Not quite—because it’s made just for you.

That’s how it works in the world of interior design. Once we place an order for that gorgeous custom sofa or hand-selected wallpaper, it’s like your pizza—tailored specifically to your taste. There’s no sending it back to the kitchen!

Bespoke Means One-of-a-Kind

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we take pride in creating spaces that are 100% personalized to fit your unique style. We’re talking about custom fabrics, one-of-a-kind furniture, and exclusive art pieces. This level of customization means that once an item is ordered, it’s made specifically for you—no one else can use it if you change your mind.

So, that bespoke couch we carefully selected? It’s not just a couch. It’s your couch. Once it’s in production, we can’t just toss it back to the supplier like an ill-fitting pair of jeans.

Vendor Policies and Lead Times (AKA The Serious Stuff)

Much like that pizza (anchovies or not), the vendors and manufacturers we work with have strict policies. They often create items on a made-to-order basis, which means they’re crafted specifically for your project. Lead times can be long (think artisan craftsmanship doesn’t happen overnight!), and by the time your fabulous piece is ready, returning it simply isn’t an option.

But don’t worry, at Nikki Levy Interiors, we make sure all these details are communicated upfront. We want you to know exactly what you’re getting and when to expect it.

Communication is Key

Before we place an order, it’s essential to ask questions, review materials, and make sure you’re 100% in love with your choices. Nikki Levy Interiors provides mood boards, samples, and 3D renderings so you can visualize everything. The more questions you ask, the fewer surprises there will be when that custom sofa (or pizza!) arrives.

Trust me, we’d rather you say, “Hmm, not sure about those anchovies” before we place the order than after it’s delivered.

Why Trust Is Everything

Interior design is a journey, and like all great journeys, trust is crucial. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we work hard to make sure every selection is something you’ll adore. But we need your input too! That’s why it’s so important for clients to ask questions, share their thoughts, and trust our expertise along the way.

We’re in this together, and once we’re past the “ordering the pizza” stage, we’re committed to making your space everything you dreamed of—no returns necessary!

The Bottom Line

So, why don’t interior designers like Nikki Levy Interiors accept returns? Because every piece we order is custom-made, just for you. There’s no going back once that order is placed, so it’s vital that you ask all your questions upfront, and feel confident about the design choices we’re making together.

Let’s avoid the anchovy scenario, shall we? If you’re ready to dive into a beautifully personalized space, reach out to Nikki Levy Interiors today! We promise it’ll be chef’s kiss perfect.

Trust: The Key to a Great Design Relationship and a Beautiful Home

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we believe that the foundation of every successful design project isn’t just about color palettes, furniture, or floor plans—it’s about trust. When you work with a designer, you’re not just collaborating on a space, you’re building a relationship that will directly reflect in your home. Trust is the magic ingredient that takes a good project and turns it into something extraordinary. When you trust your designer, the end result is a home that truly feels like you, while embracing the creative vision and expertise of the design team.

Why Trust is the Heart of Great Design

Designing a home is a deeply personal experience. At Nikki Levy Interiors (NLI), we pride ourselves on taking the time to understand not just what you want for your space, but how you live, your style preferences, and even the little quirks that make your home feel like home. Trust allows us to dive deep into your vision, making the process collaborative and fun.

Here’s why trust is essential to the design process:

  • Openness to Ideas: When there’s a foundation of trust, you’ll feel more open to hearing bold suggestions and fresh ideas. Trusting your designer means you’re willing to explore new possibilities—ones that you might not have thought of yourself but end up loving.
  • A Clear Vision: Trusting your designer means that when challenges come up, you know they’ve got it handled. Whether it’s navigating tricky design choices or finding solutions to unexpected issues, trust allows us to keep the design vision intact and moving forward.
  • Personalized Design: At NLI, we never design the same space twice. Trusting us allows us to tap into our creativity, ensuring your home is unique to your tastes and lifestyle, but also reflects the signature refined, contemporary chic style we’re known for.

The Downside of Delaying Decisions: How the Thread is Lost

One of the biggest challenges in any design process is decision-making. While it can feel tempting to take extra time before making choices, delays can disrupt the flow and thread of a design. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we’ve seen firsthand how project momentum can falter when decisions are delayed, and ultimately, it can affect the overall vision of your home.

Here’s why it’s important not to delay decisions:

  • Losing the Creative Thread: Design is like a tapestry. Every choice—whether it’s a fabric, a paint color, or a piece of furniture—connects to the next. When decisions are delayed, it’s easy to lose the thread, which can make the design feel disjointed. Staying on top of decisions ensures that the flow of the project remains cohesive and aligned with the initial vision.
  • Missed Opportunities: The design world moves quickly, and delaying decisions can result in missing out on key pieces. Whether it’s a custom sofa or a stunning light fixture, things sell out fast. Trusting your designer’s instinct and making timely decisions helps ensure that you get the perfect elements for your home.
  • Added Stress: Prolonging decisions can add unnecessary stress to the process, both for you and for the design team. When timelines are stretched, it can lead to project delays, increased costs, and frustration. Keeping the momentum going not only reduces stress but helps us keep everything on track for a smooth, enjoyable design journey.

How NLI Keeps the Design Process On Track

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we understand that making big design decisions can feel overwhelming. That’s why we focus on building trust right from the start, so you feel confident throughout the entire process.

Here’s how we make sure you never lose the thread and your project stays on course:

  • Clear Communication: We keep you in the loop at every stage of the design process, so you know what decisions need to be made and when. Our streamlined approach ensures that nothing falls through the cracks, and you have all the information you need to make timely, confident choices.
  • Guided Expertise: You’re never alone when it comes to decision-making. Our team is here to guide you every step of the way, offering expert advice and recommendations to help you feel confident in every choice. Trusting our experience allows us to help you make decisions that align with your vision while ensuring the space is cohesive and stylish.
  • Respect for Your Time: We know that life gets busy, which is why we strive to keep the process efficient and enjoyable. Trusting us to handle the details means you can focus on what’s important, without worrying about every little decision.

The Trust Reflects in the Final Design

When there’s trust between you and your designer, it shows in the final result. Your home becomes more than just a collection of furniture and decor—it’s a space that tells your story. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we understand that trust allows us to take risks, be creative, and truly bring your vision to life in ways that feel authentic and fresh.

Here’s how trust reflects in the home:

  • Cohesion: Trust allows us to create a space that feels like a seamless extension of you. Every detail, from the paint color to the furniture layout, works together harmoniously.
  • Uniqueness: By trusting us to bring our design expertise to the table, we’re able to push boundaries and create something truly unique and reflective of your style.
  • Emotional Connection: When you trust your designer, the design process becomes more enjoyable and meaningful. This connection reflects in the final product, resulting in a home that not only looks beautiful but also feels right.

Nikki Levy Interiors: Your Trusted Partner in Design

At Nikki Levy Interiors, trust is at the heart of everything we do. From the initial consultation to the final reveal, we believe that great design comes from great relationships. When you trust us to lead the way, we’ll create a home that not only meets your needs but exceeds your expectations.

Don’t let indecision stall your project—trust our team to guide you, make timely decisions, and keep the creative vision alive. Together, we’ll create a space that is as unique and beautiful as you are.

Exploring Different Design Styles: How to Blend Them with Contemporary Chic

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we know that interior design is never one-size-fits-all. Whether you’re drawn to the charm of farmhouse design, the clean lines of mid-century modern, or the luxury of traditional spaces, every design style has its own unique beauty. The real magic happens when these styles are blended seamlessly with a contemporary edge. Done right, any design style can be massaged into something fresh, modern, and undeniably chic.

Let’s explore some popular design styles and see how they can be transformed with contemporary flair, creating spaces that feel both timeless and current.

1. Modern Farmhouse: From Rustic to Refined

The modern farmhouse look is all about warmth, comfort, and that cozy, lived-in feel. Think reclaimed wood, neutral tones, and simple, functional furniture. It’s a design style that’s perfect for family homes, but what if you want to give it a contemporary twist?

How Nikki Levy Interiors Adds a Contemporary Edge:

  • Sleeker Lines: By swapping out chunky, rustic furniture for pieces with cleaner lines, you can maintain the cozy vibe of farmhouse while making the space feel more polished.
  • Neutral Palette with Bold Accents: We love sticking with the farmhouse’s neutral color scheme but adding pops of contemporary color—like bold black, deep navy, or even brass fixtures—for a modern contrast.
  • Mixing Textures: Combining natural wood with more contemporary materials like concrete or matte black metals adds depth and sophistication.

Perfect for creating that cozy, inviting feel with a modern twist!

2. Mid-Century Modern: Vintage Meets Now

Mid-century modern is one of the most beloved design styles, known for its clean lines, organic shapes, and functional beauty. It’s all about simplicity and flow, but with a few tweaks, it can look more updated and less like a blast from the past.

How Nikki Levy Interiors Brings Mid-Century into the Present:

  • Updating Color Palettes: While mid-century modern leans on earthy tones like mustard and olive, we like to integrate more contemporary hues—think rich jewel tones or sleek monochromes.
  • Mixing Old with New: By pairing vintage mid-century pieces with contemporary decor, such as modern art or minimalist lighting, the space feels more dynamic and forward-thinking.
  • Refined Furniture Choices: Swapping out overly retro furniture for pieces with a bit more luxe—like a velvet sofa or brass accents—keeps the space from feeling too dated.

Mid-century modern is timeless, but with the right touch, it becomes effortlessly current.

3. Traditional Design: Classic with a Contemporary Twist

Traditional design is all about elegance, symmetry, and timeless charm. Picture ornate furniture, heavy drapery, and intricate moldings. While traditional spaces can sometimes feel overly formal or outdated, blending them with contemporary elements creates a fresh, sophisticated look.

How Nikki Levy Interiors Brings Traditional Into 2024:

  • Simplifying Furniture Shapes: Traditional furniture often features curved legs and heavy carvings. By introducing more streamlined, contemporary pieces, we maintain the elegance but give the room a lighter, more modern feel.
  • Modernizing Color Schemes: Traditional design loves deep reds and greens. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we refresh these spaces by incorporating lighter neutrals like soft greys or crisp whites, keeping some traditional pops of color to maintain the room’s rich character.
  • Mixing Antiques with Modern Decor: Instead of filling the room with only antiques, we blend classic pieces with contemporary artwork, lighting, or minimalist accessories, creating a balanced yet luxurious space.

Traditional spaces can look fresh and modern when balanced with the right contemporary elements.

4. Coastal Design: Breezy and Contemporary

Coastal design is inspired by the sea, with light, airy spaces, soft blues, and natural materials like wood and rattan. It’s all about relaxation, but it can sometimes feel overly casual or predictable. So, how do you give it that chic, contemporary edge?

How Nikki Levy Interiors Adds a Modern Breeze to Coastal Spaces:

  • Sleek Furniture: Swapping out overly beachy furniture for pieces with clean lines and more structure gives coastal spaces a modern, sophisticated twist.
  • Bold Accent Colors: While soft blues and whites define coastal style, we love adding unexpected bold accents—like a deep navy or even sleek black fixtures—to create a striking contrast.
  • Minimalism: By reducing the number of coastal-themed accessories (think fewer shells and beachy knick-knacks) and focusing on quality pieces, we create a cleaner, more contemporary aesthetic.

Coastal spaces can be elegant and modern while still feeling breezy and relaxing.

5. Industrial Design: Raw Meets Refined

Industrial design is defined by its use of raw materials like brick, concrete, and exposed pipes. It’s edgy and urban, but it can feel a little too gritty if not balanced properly. When massaged into contemporary, it becomes a refined, stylish space.

How Nikki Levy Interiors Refines Industrial Spaces:

  • Soften with Textiles: Adding soft furnishings like plush rugs or velvet cushions helps balance out the rawness of industrial materials.
  • Mixing Materials: Instead of sticking solely to concrete and steel, we bring in warm woods, polished metals, or sleek lighting to give the space a more refined, contemporary feel.
  • Neutral Palette with Luxe Touches: Industrial design loves a neutral palette, but we take it up a notch with contemporary touches like matte black fixtures, marble accents, or sleek lighting designs.

The key to making industrial spaces contemporary is in the mix—balancing raw materials with refined finishes.

6. Bohemian: Eclectic Yet Polished

Bohemian design is free-spirited, colorful, and full of personality. It’s all about mixing patterns, textures, and global influences. However, to avoid it feeling too chaotic or cluttered, we can weave in contemporary elements that give it a more curated, modern vibe.

How Nikki Levy Interiors Curates Bohemian Style:

  • Neutral Backdrops: While Boho style loves color, we tone it down by using a neutral base and allowing pops of color and pattern to shine through accessories and textiles.
  • Streamlined Furniture: Instead of going overboard with eclectic furniture, we incorporate more modern, sleek pieces to ground the space.
  • Less is More: Bohemian doesn’t have to mean cluttered. We carefully select statement pieces and give them room to breathe, creating a more polished, contemporary aesthetic.

Boho doesn’t have to be chaotic—when done right, it can feel both eclectic and sleek.

Nikki Levy Interiors: Blending Styles for Contemporary Chic

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we know that no two homes (or homeowners!) are alike. Whether you’re drawn to the warm, rustic charm of modern farmhouse or the clean lines of mid-century modern, we specialize in massaging your favorite design style into something fresh and contemporary. Our expert team combines timeless design elements with modern flair to create spaces that feel personal, elegant, and always chic.

We believe that great design is about balance—honoring the beauty of classic styles while keeping things fresh and forward-thinking. With our eye for detail and a deep understanding of how to blend old with new, Nikki Levy Interiorscan help transform any space into a masterpiece of contemporary design.

The Ultimate Guide to Paint Sheens: From Matte to Venetian Plaster (and Everything In Between)

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we believe that every wall has the potential to be a canvas. The right paint sheen not only transforms a room but also brings out the true essence of your design vision. From the contemporary chic of matte finishes to the timeless elegance of Venetian plaster, Nikki Levy Interiors uses these finishes to create spaces that are as stunning as they are practical. Each paint sheen we select reflects the balance of style and function that defines our approach to modern, sophisticated interiors.

Choosing the perfect sheen is essential for creating the right atmosphere, and we’re here to help you understand how each option fits your lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for a cozy, minimalist vibe or a bold, luxe finish, we’ve got all the tips and insights to guide you.

Matte Paint: The Minimalist’s Dream

Matte paint is the cool, calm, and collected friend of the paint world. It offers a beautiful, smooth finish that doesn’t reflect much light, perfect for modern spaces where subtle elegance reigns.

Pros:

  • Hides imperfections: Matte is ideal for walls that have a few imperfections to cover up.
  • Sophisticated look: It’s perfect for a contemporary, cozy feel in living rooms or bedrooms.

Cons:

  • High maintenance: Matte paint is not the most forgiving when it comes to cleaning. A scuff may mean touch-ups.

Best For: Low-traffic areas and spaces where subtlety is key.

Lime Wash: Rustic Meets Chic

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we love to use lime wash to bring warmth and character to spaces while still maintaining a contemporary edge. The natural, slightly weathered look of lime wash can add depth to a room, evoking a European, handcrafted feel that pairs beautifully with modern elements.

Pros:

  • Natural materials: Lime wash is breathable and eco-friendly.
  • Soft, textural finish: The gorgeous, cloudy effect gives your walls a one-of-a-kind look.

Cons:

  • Needs upkeep: Lime wash can rub off or fade, so reapplication might be necessary.

Best For: Feature walls and areas where you want to make a bold statement.

Textured Paint: Artistic Expression

When we want to create a space that feels totally unique and full of personality, textured paint is our go-to. Textured finishes add depth and dimension to walls, making them feel more like art than a backdrop.

Pros:

  • Covers imperfections: Textured paint hides wall flaws while creating a custom, tactile experience.
  • Unlimited creativity: You can experiment with different textures to achieve a look that’s uniquely yours.

Cons:

  • Hard to touch up: Matching the texture for repairs can be tricky.

Best For: Feature walls and areas where you want to make a bold statement.

Venetian Plaster: The Epitome of Luxe

Few finishes rival the luxury of Venetian plaster, and we love using it to create striking, high-end spaces that exude elegance. With its smooth, polished surface and subtle depth, Venetian plaster is perfect for adding a touch of drama to any room.

Pros:

  • Luxurious finish: The texture and sheen create a marble-like effect that feels opulent.
  • Durable and long-lasting: Venetian plaster holds up beautifully over time.

Cons:

  • Costly: The high-end look comes with a higher price tag.
  • Skilled application needed: It’s best to leave Venetian plaster to the pros for a flawless finish.

Best For: High-impact areas like dining rooms, powder rooms, or entryways.

Satin Paint: The Versatile Hero

At Nikki Levy Interiors, satin finishes are our secret weapon for blending practicality with style. Satin provides just enough shine to brighten a room while being tough enough to handle daily life—making it a staple in high-traffic areas.

Pros:

  • Durable: Satin is easy to clean and can handle a bit of wear and tear.
  • Subtle glow: It offers a soft sheen that adds warmth without being too reflective.

Cons:

  • Emphasizes imperfections: Like other sheens with a bit of shine, satin can show wall flaws if not applied on a smooth surface.

Best For: Kitchens, bathrooms, and hallways that need both style and functionality.

Semi-Gloss Paint: Shine with Durability

When we’re designing spaces that need both shine and durability, semi-gloss is our go-to. Its reflective quality brightens up rooms, while its toughness makes it perfect for doors, trim, and high-traffic areas.

Pros:

  • Super durable: Semi-gloss stands up to frequent cleaning and scrubbing, making it ideal for homes with kids or pets.
  • Light-reflecting: Adds a bright, polished look to spaces that need a little more light.

Cons:

  • Reveals imperfections: Like satin, semi-gloss can bring out any bumps or flaws in the wall.

Best For: Doors, trims, and rooms where durability is a priority.

High-Gloss Paint: For the Bold and the Brave

High-gloss paint is the showstopper of the paint world. It’s bold, dramatic, and perfect for adding a high-end, glamorous touch to any space. At Nikki Levy Interiors, we love using high-gloss in small doses, like on trim or furniture, to make a powerful style statement.

Pros:

  • Tough and durable: High-gloss can handle just about anything and is easy to clean.
  • Reflective and eye-catching: Perfect for adding drama and elegance to a space.

Cons:

  • Shows every flaw: You’ll need to make sure your walls are perfectly smooth before applying.

Best For: Trim, cabinets, and spaces where you want to turn up the drama.

How to Set a Table the South African Way: A Tradition of Community, Celebration, and Family

Coming from South Africa, one of the things that surprised me most about living in the USA was how rare it is to see a beautifully set table or to enjoy a proper “tea.” In South Africa, setting the table and having tea (what some might call “high tea”) is more than just a meal—it’s a cherished tradition, a moment to pause, gather, and enjoy good company. Whether you’re hosting a casual brunch, a formal dinner, or just a simple tea with friends, there’s something special about bringing a bit of South African hospitality into your home. Here’s how to set a table the South African way, and why these little touches can make all the difference.

The Art of Setting the Table

In South Africa, setting the table is a ritual that reflects care, thoughtfulness, and attention to detail. It’s about creating an inviting space where guests feel welcomed and appreciated. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Start with the Basics:
    • Tablecloth or Runner: Begin by laying a beautiful tablecloth or a runner down the center of your table. In South Africa, we love fabrics with a bit of texture or a subtle pattern—something that adds warmth and charm.
    • Placemats and Chargers: Next, add placemats or chargers at each setting. These not only protect your table but also create a defined space for each guest, making the table look more organized and polished.
  2. The Right Cutlery:
    • Knife and Fork: Place the knife on the right side of the plate with the blade facing inward, and the fork on the left. If you’re serving multiple courses, layer the cutlery from the outside in—starting with the utensils for the first course on the outermost sides.
    • Dessert Spoon or Fork: If you’re planning to serve dessert, place the spoon or fork horizontally above the plate, with the handle facing right.
  3. Plates and Bowls:
    • Main Plate: The main plate goes in the center of each setting. If you’re serving a soup or starter, place the appropriate dish on top of the main plate.
    • Bread Plate: To the left of the fork, place a small bread plate with a butter knife resting across it.
  4. Glassware:
    • Wine Glasses and Water Glasses: Place the water glass directly above the knife, with the wine glass slightly to the right. If you’re serving both red and white wine, you can add an extra glass above the main wine glass.
  5. Napkins:
    • Folding or Rolling: Napkins can be either folded neatly and placed on the plate or in the glass, or rolled and tied with a decorative napkin ring. The key is to add a touch of elegance without overcomplicating things.
  6. The Final Touches:
    • Centerpieces: Add a simple centerpiece that complements the setting—think fresh flowers, candles, or a small arrangement of seasonal fruits. In South Africa, we love using natural elements that bring a bit of the outdoors inside.

Serving Tea the South African Way

In South Africa, “tea” is a beloved tradition, not just a beverage. It’s a time to slow down, savor the moment, and enjoy good company. Here’s how to serve tea the South African way:

  1. The Tea Set:
    • Teapot and Cups: A proper tea set is essential. Choose a teapot that can hold enough tea for everyone, and pair it with matching cups and saucers. In South Africa, we often use fine china or beautifully crafted pottery for a touch of elegance.
    • Milk and Sugar: Don’t forget the milk jug and sugar bowl. Place them on the table with small spoons for serving. If you like, you can also include honey or lemon slices for added flavor.
  2. The Treats:
    • Scones and Savories: No South African tea is complete without some delicious treats. Scones, served with clotted cream and jam, are a classic choice. You might also offer a selection of savory bites like sandwiches, quiches, or sausage rolls.
    • Cakes and Pastries: For a sweeter touch, include a variety of cakes and pastries. In South Africa, we love milk tart, koeksisters (a type of syrup-soaked doughnut), or a simple slice of cake.
  3. Setting the Tea Table:
    • Tea Tray: Arrange the teapot, cups, and milk and sugar on a tray for easy serving. Place the tray in the center of the table so guests can help themselves.
    • Plates and Cutlery: Lay out small plates, forks, and knives for the treats. Don’t forget the napkins!

More Than Just Decor: Setting a Table with Heart

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we design homes with community, celebrations, and family at the forefront of our minds. For us, setting a table isn’t just about creating a pretty arrangement—it’s about fostering connections, encouraging conversations, and creating a space where memories are made. Every dining room we design is crafted to be a place where loved ones gather, whether for a casual weeknight dinner or a special occasion.

When you set a table in one of our dining rooms, you’re not just arranging plates and silverware; you’re setting the stage for moments that matter. The table becomes a canvas for your family’s stories, a place where celebrations unfold, and where the simple act of sharing a meal can bring people closer together.

By bringing a bit of South African tradition into your home, you’re embracing the idea that a well-set table is about more than just aesthetics. It’s about creating an environment where people feel valued and connected, where every meal is an opportunity to pause, reflect, and enjoy the company of those around you.

Why It Matters

Setting the table the South African way is about more than just making things look nice—it’s about creating an experience. It’s a way of showing your guests that they matter, that you’ve taken the time to make them feel special. Whether it’s a casual tea or a formal dinner, these small touches can transform an ordinary meal into something memorable.

At Nikki Levy Interiors, we believe that every detail counts, and that includes how you set your table. By incorporating these South African traditions into your home, you’re not just decorating—you’re creating a space where community, celebration, and family can thrive.
