The Best Room in the House Might Be a Hallway
Give me a leftover pocket of space and I’ll find you a job for it before you’ve even decided it’s a problem.
Some of my favorite moments in a home didn’t start as design decisions. They started as wasted square footage. An extra-wide hallway. A weird gap by a closet. Dead space outside a garage.
The Desk Nobody Planned For
People need a spot to sit. Work from home, a guest catching up on email, a kid doing homework while dinner’s going. We’ve been carving out desk spaces in home after home lately, and half the time the best spot for one is a hallway. Wide enough to walk through, wide enough to work in. Nobody sees it coming until it’s built.
The Reading Corner
One of my favorites recently was another ultra-wide hallway that had no real job. We gave it a window seat and floor to ceiling bookshelves and turned it into the reading corner every house should have. The clients love it. It might be my favorite kind of project, the space nobody thought to use, doing more work than the rooms around it.
Beds Out of Nowhere
We used a nook for fold-down, wall-mounted bunk beds and got four extra sleeping spots for the grandkids out of it. Four beds. Out of a nook. That’s the kind of math that makes a client fall in love with their own house again.
Laundry Where You’d Never Expect It
We double stacked a washer and dryer in an open hallway nook right outside the kids’ bedrooms. No laundry room to hunt down, no basket dragged across the house. It’s just there, right where the mess actually happens.
A Window Where a Wall Used To Be
There was a small space off a closet, and the closet itself was stunning, so we didn’t want to hide it. We opened the nook into a window and put a Peloton right there, so she can look outside while she works out. A tiny space, and now it’s the best seat in the house for a workout.
The Disappearing Door
If a wall is clad and there’s a niche to work with, that niche can become a hidden door. Behind it, real storage. You get the closet without losing the wall.
A Nook for the Wine
Wine storage is one of my favorite uses for an odd little space. It doesn’t need much depth, just the right nook, and suddenly you’ve got a feature instead of a gap in the wall.
Breakfast in the Primary Suite
We tucked a breakfast bar into a nook right inside a primary bedroom. Coffee without leaving your own wing of the house. It’s a small thing that changes how the whole morning feels.
Storage With a Purpose
A bench outside a garage is such an easy win. Somewhere to sit, somewhere to put things down, somewhere to hide a little storage. It always earns its keep.
The Wall That Changes
A mudroom nook is one of the best places in the whole house for a rotating display. Kids’ art, trophies, whatever they’re proud of that month. Swap it out as often as they outgrow it. Art is always a winner in a spot like this.
A desk. A library. Four extra beds. Laundry nobody has to think about. A workout with a view. Storage that disappears. Wine instead of a gap in the wall. Coffee without leaving your own wing of the house. A gallery for a nine year old’s paintings. That’s what a nook actually is, once you stop calling it leftover space.
